Let's Get Your Mind Ready for Meditation First
Ok, ready for your meditation-preparation?: You’ve made it this far, so let’s get started shall we? Here are some key points to consider in order to benefit your personal growth:1) If you’re lucky enough to have a special place that is not used for anything else – grab it! Try not to use it for anything else. You’ll impregnate the spot with spiritual vibrations which will help make days meditation deeper than the last. 2) Always begin and end your sessions with a prayer. 3) Early morning when you wake up and before you go to bed are great times to meditate. Wait about an hour after you’ve had a meal. Also, now is a good time to bring up the oh so tender subject of WHAT you eat. Fruits are the most spiritually beneficial of all foods. Can I get you to at least start thinking about eating nuts, cheese, eggs, and vegetables as opposed to meat? Hey, I love a great steak too so it’s really about balance. 4) Now you guys out there bear with me… but a bath has not only a cleansing effect on the body, but on the mind as well. It calms the nerves! 5) Whether you choose the lotus position, or use that nice meditation chair we talked about, find that quiet spot or corner and drape a woolen blanket over it. If you have a silk cloth, drape that over the woolen cloth. Make sure it’s tucked under your feet and face east. If you’re like me and scream why!? Fine- The blankets protect you from the downward pull of earth currents, while facing east helps because solar currents flow from there. It helps in meditation.
Posture: It’s important to have your spine straight. Now, you can achieve this by the standard eastern lotus position as pictured if you’re limber. Having your spine nice and straight doesn’t mean you need to be strained or uncomfortable. Quite the contrary, it is a stable position.
It’s perfectly fine for you to find a nice, armless chair where your feet are flat on the ground. Now friends, chin up (parallel to the ground), shoulders back, chest out. Don’t strain! A good trick to know if you’re in the correct position is to over-arch your back then slowly bring yourself to a center position. You should be able to feel this. (You physical therapists and PTA’s should know exactly what I’m saying here; it’s your correct lifting posture). It’s all about balance and you’ll hear me talk about that word a lot.
Your hands are facing upward and placed in the crease between your legs and torso. This will help you keep you in the correct posture. Checkpoint here is that 1- Your spine is straight 2-There is no strain in your position and 3- You’re able relax every muscle in your body.
Now might be a great time to put this recommended meditation aid in!
Comfortable? Great! I’d like you now to breath in through the nostrils to a count of 15 or so, hold for the same count, then finally exhale through the mouth to a count of 15. It can be a little longer or slower but keep the pace of your count the same throughout ok?
Practice this six to twelve times. Your last peremptory step is to inhale with a deep breath while tensing every part of your body and clenching those fists. Release your breath with a two step “huh huh” and relax your body all at once. Do this six times. You should already feel much more relaxed. Forget about your breath and just let it be. Don’t think about what you want, or how to solve a particular problem. I know they’ll pop up, but use your will power to push them aside. Concentrate on God.
SIDEBAR: I’m going to use the pretty universal reference “God” here. Depending on what part of the world you’re from, most true religions are monotheistic. (One Supreme Being or power). Some make note of, and appeal to different aspects of God where there can be many different names. Many of us in the west just don’t understand this concept and mistake those who do as being heathens or idol worshipers or even worse. How about for now maybe I can get you to think of God as both male and female
Instead gaze up to your “third eye” the “Christ Consciousness center” , “spiritual eye”, what have you. It comes naturally when you concentrate deeply on something. "What time do I pick up Jess from soccer practice?" Or… "When I performed that triple bi-pass surgery earlier today could I have done it this way instead of…bla bla… and did I remember to take out that sponge?!" Notice where your eyes go? That’s it!! Christ said: “The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light”
